Over the years, I have written about the silica sand mining in North Mankato, Minnesota, and its impact on our beloved farmland. This industry has so threatened this beautiful southeastern corner of Minnesota that its citizens have bravely organized to get the bluff.
After the Treaties of the Traverse of the Sioux in 1853, Mankato was designated the seat of Blue Earth County, and steamboats on the Minnesota River brought more settlers to the area. In the fall of 1862, I spent six weeks in and around the Minnesota River Valley. In 1868 the railway came to Manksato, the steamship to St. Paul and the population of the town grew rapidly, but the last steamship left Mankingato in April 1897. On June 2, Brehmer and McIntosh took a Leyland pickup truck to hike to Thunderbird Falls, about 800 kilometers (1,200 miles) north of North Mankedato.
